Team USA Still Undefeated in International Competition
‘Young and Aggressive’ MMA Fighters’ Sweep Team Italy on 1st Overseas Trip
SCHAUMBURG, IL – “The young and aggressive mixed martial artists representing Team USA proved once again that when it comes to international fighting, Team USA rocks,” said Rob Zbilski, president of the Mixed Martial Arts Sport Federation.
Team USA, which fights under the MMASF, defeated a more experienced Team Italy on Friday night in Livorno, Italy, winning two of three bouts with a draw in the other. The wins in Italy follow Team USA’s 6-4 defeat in July of Team World, comprised of MMA fighters from Australia, Ireland and Poland, at Toyota Park in Bridgeview.
- Alexander White, of Ironton, Mo., fought at 154 lbs. His win with a guillotine choke hold moved his international record to 2-0, with an overall amateur record of 10-0.
- Austin Knight, who represented Team USA at 147 lbs., won with a strangle choke hold. Knight, of Farmington, Mo., remains undefeated with a record of 5-0.
- Jason Slattery, of Florissant, Mo., fought to a draw at 165 lbs. He is now 7-0-1.
Coach Joe Worden, of Caledonia, Mo., traveled with the team to Livorno.
Speaking from MMASF headquarters in Schaumburg, Zbilski said, “Alex, Austin and Jason showed Team Italy and the world that Team USA is for real. Our young and aggressive fighters took on and defeated a very experienced and seasoned team of fighters from Italy. We knew we would be competitive, but we didn’t think we would walk through them.
“Alex, Austin and Jason showed the world what we’ve always known: The MMASF has some of the best, young fighters in the U.S. representing us and our country. We’re especially proud and excited that one of our top fighters, Alex White, is still undefeated in international competition at 2-0,” Zbilski said.
“We’re looking forward to a Jan. 21 rematch with Team Italy at Real Time Sports Bar in St. Charles,” Zbilski added.
